10 yrs ago i made a list of my favorite 12 songs in order (because i couldnt decide on 10). no one gave a shit at the time, so im doing it again while excluding every song/artist on the first list while reducing the original receiving audience of 3 people to a more modern 0 people. mostly doing it to see if i can still accomplish a goal, no matter how trivial, but also doing it in case prosbro finally vanishes

10 yrs ago was really, really fucking terrible, and in a tip-of-the-iceberg kind of way. somehow i still feel like the exact same person but lacking any of the energy/forward momentum i once had.
atm ive narrowed it down to 33 songs out of 68,881 options but the issue is ranking them (is jesu #2 or is magrudergrind). also trying to not start browsing/trawling for more.]]-----------

i had a lot more to choose from (maybe 15k total 10 years ago - meaning this time i allowed +24 instead of +12), and resolutely did not consider any artist from the first list, meaning this list does not replace/supercede the original, but it does mesh. combining the two would be an entirely distinct operation. i will add that the ranking is inadvertently somewhat loose, since 75% of it is entirely fluid from day to day and hour to hour.

the most important change is that there is no black metal this time, because the more i listen to gorgoroth and DsO, the more convinced i am that they are the peak, but i am barred from listing them again.

so ill mention this preemptively: i would describe many of these as 'perfect songs', which means that the first several at the top of the list are actually 'perfect songs' that i dont think could imaginably be improved upon, and then the rest are "perfect", and then may be the last third of the 24 are pErFeCt.

i mention that only so i can begin to discuss #1, because it is the only song on this list that i truly, truly believe to be flawless and immaculate. i havent yet decided whether or not to spend 300 words per song justifying my choices, so as a placeholder just know that 'someone like you - fast track vocal mix' is probably the finest song ever made. i can very easily write a page or more on each of these songs. like why i had to go with wu tang 7th chamber instead of da mystery of chessboxin, which i like more, because chessboxin ends with a masta killa verse that drives me fucking insane i hate it so much. why did they allow that. also, lots of notes on the specific version of the jesu and reagan youth entries, the use of 'you on the run' in the limits of control OST, etc

its less crap than last years. i probably tell that to all the years. if i had started this endeavor yesterday, it would just be the new black sheep wall album. godDAMN or the new mount eerie.
 
i tried to get LoC out of there, i really did. its such a shitty lazy gutting of the song on my part and it doesnt fit at all and i hate it and i wanted it to be amenra - boden or indian - directional or anything else but i keep getting distracted by eshopping simultaneously for an AK47 and the lego detective office set

the only part im like a+ on is BF into MSA - sister into sunburst chem. and a bunch of that is just because it triggers limbo flashbacks and fucking christ that fucking game

oh and i sat for like 2 weeks trying to decide between echoes of yul - last, echoes of yul - last (echoes of yul version), and cult of luna - passing through (echoes of yul version), and just gave up suuuuper hard when i figured out that the remix of last played backwards over the original kinda sorta synched and made a new, hybrid species of unsubtle, atmosphere-wrecking fuckery that sounds great followed by planning for burial.

i cant tell if it actually flows at all or if its just a ton of songs i really like in a row but there you go. headphones help a lot (and they are needed for holifernes/lavender) (and i cant quite get it to render as an mp3 at the exact levels it espouses as an acid project, so...its quieter and more muddled than it should be? and 75% more disappointing than it should be)(and i listened to it with normal headphones at work and it fucking sounds like 8 bags of shit ass because my waveforms arent behaving but im done with this shit)

it's an actual mix this time. which means i started over 2 months ago and the more time i spent on it, the harder it got. it's just like hydrogen line in that regard, so some bits i like, most bits i hate, none of it is really mine, and it has been entirely cobbled together within the last few days as i got desperate and nervous.

most of my time was spent overthinking this stupid exercise and it just doesnt matter. the order of songs is always the most important part but then they start to organize on their own and drift away into new and separate threads, and trying to corral them seems offensive. i imagine this would be a lot easier if these songs had drops and wibbly womps and BPMs and didnt...start to leak.

i remixed a shitty 128k youtube rip of a remix of crystal castles - transgender and my laptop coughed a little at the intro and instead of trying to fix it i just went 'well gr8 now it's tr00 and sounds like a cd skipping just like they wouldve wanted' and farted that guy out, which sums the whole thing up.

i had never even heard 'trespassers w' until a few nights ago, but then i read the lyrics and was all liek 'lol ya dats sad enuff'. in fact most of these are new-ish (except ASMZ and jesu); i tried to aim for only things ive heard since this time last year. also i stacked some very sparse songs in the middle, which, while they sound pretty great together, the transitions are basically just waiting for the tones from one to finally die so the next can ooze forwards which is pretty lazy mixmaking. but whatever, yr lucky, i couldve tried to cover 'movie (never made)' as was my original plan. or put theory of machines at the end again.

you know what? fuck you, theory of machines is the best goddamn song i have ever heard and im gonna throw at least part of it in. also i pitch-shifted we all faulter. for NO. REASON. AT. ALL.

i love these songs. a lot. i have listened to all of them 2 or 3 times a night in the course of trying to make a mix over making a playlist, and they never dulled.
